National Coalition Building

BUILDING A QUEER LEFT

QEJ is building a national coalition of progressive, grassroots LGBT organizations who make economic and racial justice central to their work. By bringing together these organizations from across the country, we are building the strength and infrastructure of the queer left. This network will engage in work to expand the narrow definition of what constitutes a “gay issue,” and bring attention to the concerns of LGBT people that are too frequently excluded from our movement’s current priorities: low-income folks, people of color, prisoners, immigrants, and transgender folks. This is being done through the following:

Public Education: QEJ regularly sponsors panels, community forums, and workshops in NYC as in conferences around the country. We also produce white papers, factsheets, and reports useful to queer and progressive organizers for advocacy and training.

Communications and Media: QEJ regularly writes blog posts, op-eds and press releases on issues impacting queers, but not defined by the “gay” agenda. We also are pulling together a queer communications strategy team to do strategic communications work on national issues impacting queers.

Capacity Building and Skills Sharing: Our Act Queer! monthly teleconference series feature queer strategies, organizing and analysis on topics such as healthcare, prisons and policing, and immigration. Audio from the calls is available on our website.
